US: Strong season for organic pears

David Posner, CEO and founder of Awe Sum Organics, says this is a great season for Organic Pears. "This year we are getting excellent quality pears due to perfect growing conditions. Our Pears come from one of the best pear producing regions in the world, the Rio Negro Valley of Argentina. PAI, our organic pear growing partner is a true leader in Argentinean organic fruit production. As one of the first organic fruit growers in the region, PAI is also one of the largest. The family-operated cooperative owns the only all-organic packing house in the Rio Negro Valley, packing for themselves as well as other organic growers in the cooperative." Awe Sum Organics’ relationship with PAI began many years ago when their customers began requesting that they supply them with organic pears together with organic Apples. Awe Sum Organics imports some of the largest volumes of these fruits into North America. "We knew we had to find the best organic pear grower out there, and we have been working with PAI ever since," explains Posner.

“Right now our pears are coming in very strong with excellent quality. It is an exciting time of year, as pears are the first enticing top fruit of the season. Our fruit has great timing, peaking at the start of the springtime, a lot of our customers like to do early spring promotions with them." says Posner. “Our organic pears come from one of the very best producing regions in the world, the Rio Negro Valley of Argentina, optimal for pears more than any other tree fruit. The fact that it’s a rather dry climate with perfect weather for growing pears, as well as a bountiful water supply from the river which flows through the valley, the high mesas on both sides provide protection from insect pressure allowing for its recognition as a Fruit Fly Free Zone by the USDA, have all come together for perfect growing conditions for organic pears.”

Awe Sum Organics is offering the Bartlett and Red Bartlett through mid-April, the D’Anjou, Autumn Bartlett, Packham, Beurre Bosc and Golden Bosc through June, and Abate Fetel through mid-May. The Bartlett varieties are extremely popular but the season is short so get them while you can. The D’Anjou is a wonderful traditional variety that is beautiful, clean and stores well. The Packham has a creamy flesh and tantalizing fragrance. Boscs offer great storability and exceptional flavor, and the Abate Fetel is a fantastic, elegant looking variety that is highly prized in Italy. It is sweet, juicy and tender, with a uniquely delicious flavor.

Since 1985, sustainability has been at the core of Awe Sum Organics. Along with being certified organic, Awe Sum Organics and PAI are fair trade certified through Fair for Life, guaranteeing social responsibility at all stages of production and throughout the distribution chain.
