Bram Werkman, Landjuweel:

"Netherlands: "Potato market, planting behind schedule"

The planting of potatoes is again two weeks behind last year. "But if planting starts three weeks later, that does not mean that harvesting starts three weeks later. When the sun starts shining and there is some rain, then the new potatoes will grow like anything again," Bram Werkman of potato wholesale company Landjuweel from Oosternieland says. "Honestly speaking I think this is a beautiful year. It is a game with nature and for everybody in the chain there is a possibility to earn something."

"The weather is the boss for the coming weeks. From the German Pfalz we received the first news of frozen fields which had already been planted. Therefore this is again a totally different year from previous years and that causes a certain mood in the market. For the time being, we will have to be satisfied with the old Dutch potatoes or with import potatoes," Bram continues. "The volumes of import potatoes are actually not too large as yet. People think more of hotchpotch than of import potatoes, although Malta-potatoes are, especially for older consumers, still an idea. But there are still no large volumes. These will only appear at the end of April."

As far as old potatoes are concerned there are large differences in size and quality between the lots. "And that also causes a wide price range, but in general the market is stable with a fixed undertone. The demand for nice table potatoes from nearby countries is definitely present, but also the export from nearby countries is present. Furthermore the export volumes are not too large and from these countries there is demand for special varieties." Important varieties, according to Bram, are Nicola's for the firm cooking market, where demand is good and the Melody for export.
