Cinzia Busana (L'Insalata dell'Orto)

Italy: Bad weather lowers fresh cut expectations for Easter week

The Venetian company L'Insalata dell'Orto specialises in the cultivation, processing and packaging of fresh cut products. Under the chairmanship of Luigi Busana, it is managed by his children: Cinzia, Raffaella and Maurizio.

The EASY 24h range is made up of mixed and single-variety 200 g salads to be consumed in a short period of time. Freshness is guaranteed by storing the closed bag in the fridge at a temperature between +2°C and +6°C,

We asked Cinzia Busana for a comment on the current commercial season.

FreshPlaza (FP) – Cinzia, how's the current season?
Cinzia Busana (CB) – Because of bad weather in Italy and Europe, demand for fresh cut salads is stationary. Snowstorms also paralyzed transportation. But there's plenty of supply: we mostly have raw materials we produce, cultivated in greenhouses and open field in the Venice province and in the Sele plain. Though demand during Easter week is definitely lower than expectations.

FP – What can you tell us about prices?
CB – As far as we're concerned, prices have standardised around 70% though, in general, they are stationary.

FP – What about consumption?
CB – In our case it's fine. The demand for rocket and corn salad is high, even if we offer more than 100 varieties. Since January, we have recorded higher revenues.

FP – Something peculiar to point out?
CB - Our raw materials are carefully selected and harvested, and operations are carried out promptly and reliably. The commercial farms part of the Busana agri-food group have both the GlobalGap and Tesco certifications. L'Insalata dell'Orto has the ISO 9001:2008, IFS and BRC certifications as well as the Organic Farming Conformity Certificate.

We also monitor the productive cycle with the HACCP procedure, checking washing products and water with periodic microbiological and chemical analysis.

We respect a series of strict standards in order to offer a superior quality product. I would like to avoid having to compete with companies that improvise fresh cut processing and, therefore, I would want checks to be more thorough and frequent.

L'Insalata dell'Orto, partner of some important national companies for private brand processing, makes 60% of the turnover from Italian and European mass retailing and H&R. The remaining 40% comes from foreign clients.

50% of the products are distributed under the L'Insalata dell'Orto, 24H dalla Terra alla Tavola and Le Aromatiche dell'orto brands. The other 50% is placed on the market under the distributor's brand or with exclusive ranges for the various supermarkets.
