Holt Logistics:

Port of Philadelphia Gloucester Terminal largest solar panel array in North America

Holt Logistics Corp. is a family company, that has been active in the Ports of Philadelphia for four generations.

The company specialises in the provision of logistics services, including inventory reporting, barcoding, delivery reporting, tracking, supply chain reporting, inbound coordination, outward tracking and warehouse management, including the management of extensive purpose built warehouse facilities in the port. One such warehouse is the Gloucester Terminal, which even taken on its own, presents some interesting statistics.

Containing a total of 20 million cubic feet, or 6 million cubic meters of space available for refrigerated storage, the terminal is the largest dock refrigerated warehouse in the US and also the largest terminal in the country for fresh fruit.

A vast range of fresh produce passes through their terminal, including Chilean grapes, Argentinian pears, Ecuadorian bananas, Costa Rican pineapples and citrus from both Spain and South Africa, plus others.

The sheer scale of the terminal ensures that the services it provides have the greatest possible scope. Regarding fumigation, for example, anywhere between 20 and 7,200 pallets per day can be processed. The terminal actually fumigates a total in the region 25 million boxes of fruit per annum.

In terms of cold treatment the terminal again produces some impressive figures, with capacity reaching 3,500 pallets, which helps deliver a figure of 1 million boxes of fruit a year.

The terminal is
also home to Instafrio forced air cooling chambers, of which there are ten, each of which can handle 20 pallets at a time, so that 100,000 boxes can be cooled on any given day. Fruits can returned to storage temperatures in just 2-3 hours.

Instafrio chambers are also available for ripening the fruits, with capacities reaching 200 pallets at any one time. Ripening is carried out according to industrial standards and specific customer requirements.

Crucially, with increasing interest in sustainability, the terminal presents the largest roof top solar array in North America, covering 1.1 million square feet or 103,000 square meters. This equates to 27, 258 individual panels, generating a total of 9 mega watts of power each year.
