Vanzetti Fruit

"Italy: "Red Delicious represents half of our apple supply"

With only 10% of stock in the warehouses, the apple season of Savigliano's (Piedmont) Vanzetti Fruit is coming to an end. As the owner, Mauro Vanzetti (in the photo), says, "We will sell out right after Easter (31st March)."

Vanzetti Fruit is a company trading especially in apples, as the logo stresses. "Last year, we commercialised 14,000 tons of apples, 50% of which were Red Delicious, 40% Gala and the remaining 10% was made up of Golden Delicious, Fuji and Granny Smith."

The company, founded in 2004 (but with roots going back to three generations of fruit growers), is among the newest arrivals to the Saluzzo plain. New third-party growers have started collaborating with the company, which is now working on a total of 330 hectares of land.

In addition to apples, Vanzetti Fruit also specialises in peaches and nectarines (4,000 tons last year).

Its main markets are the foreign ones. "The internal market only absorbs a little percentage of our produce, whereas the most part of our turnover is channelled overseas (especially the Middle East and North Africa for apples) as well as in direct-business with mass retailers. Furthermore, the last campaign has strengthened our direct business relations, on which the main company challenge for the short-medium term is based."

The assessment on the commercial season was positive: "generally, the scenario is not very positive, though last year's performance surpassed our expectations, especially because the beginning of the season - between late August and April for apples and between July and September for peaches and nectarines - was characterised by an increase in demand, especially for apples."

The company is located in a 7,400 sq m plant built in 2007 near an existing building. It commercialises apples under the "Vanzetti Premium" (black background) and "Vanzetti (deep blue background) brand, whereas peaches and nectarines are sold under the "Erika" brand.

"This way, we meet the need to segment the top / medium quality range, personalising supply relations with some of our foreign clients."

The new warehouse made the organisation of work more efficient, especially thanks to the building of new refrigeration and processing plants.

"To date, the procedure in the warehouses comprises of stocking, pre-weighing (in water for apples and in sacks for peaches) and packing in three lines (waxing, baskets and bags, mixed product treatment)."

The main packing is carried out using single-layer cardboard and baskets for peaches, whereas apples are placed in packs (18/19 kg), in single or double-layers and in bulks. Single products are also stickered.

In addition, Vanzetti Fruit has been awarded with the main certifications concerning quality and integrity, such as GlobalGap, ISO 22005 for traceability and the BRC Global Standard for Food Safety (still underway).

As regards the recent PGI mark awarded to Cuneo's red apple, Mauro Vanzetti comments that: "The general wish is to strengthen its image as well as achieving results in terms of commercial identity. Policies to highlight the mark will make a difference and initiate a challenge for the productive sector and therefore deserve both a launch and a promotion with an impact."

"Of course, our company will be able to take advantage of the PGI mark at a national and European level, rather than at an international one, because of commercial aspects that are linked to our territory. Indeed, the agricultural and food European policies integrate our will to establish ourselves on the market because of the quality of our products and of our professionalism."
