Peru: Camposol: Creating sustainable business together with stakeholders

In 2013, Camposol will be centered in the consolidation of its social responsibility plan and programs. Since 2008, the Peruvian company has been working under a social responsibility policy oriented towards sustainable development, with the advisory of PricewaterhouseCoopers, local experts and institutions as well as with the constant feedback of our main stakeholders.

In this sense, Camposol has implemented a social responsibility management system which is based on six action lines or “challenges”:

1. Well-being of the employees, their families and the community
2. Protection of the environment
3. Quality assurance and traceability
4. Product and market development
5. Development and implementation of shared value
6. Reputation management

The company contemplates in all its day to day decisions the triple result: economic growth, social development and the protection of the environment.

The Corporate Affairs area reports directly to the General Manager and is in charge of developing and monitoring Camposol’s social responsibility policies, programs and activities.

The priorities for the development of the CSR projects are determined together with the different stakeholders. The programs that have been set up this way cover the areas of education, health, social infrastructure and empowerment for entrepreneurial activities, amongst others.

One of the objectives of Camposol for this year is to make its CSR programs grow and increase the range of beneficiaries. These programs comprise obstetric psycho-prophylaxis and prenatal stimulation for pregnant workers, the concept of useful holidays for the children of collaborators, medical campaigns, the day care center “Rayito de Sol”, the association “Juventud, Arte y Desarrollo” (“Youth, Art and Development”), training programs and others.

Wawa Wasi (day care center) “Rayito de Sol”: The attitude of our collaborators will change the future of their children
The Wawa Wasi (day care center) “Rayito de Sol” is one of the first and most emblematic social responsibility programs of Camposol. In the day care center, efforts are made to assure that the children of the company’s collaborators receive comprehensive care from trained professionals who are service-minded and have much love to care for and stimulate them during their early years, which will be decisive for their future.

This program is made possible by a strategic alliance with the Ministry of Development and Social Inclusion, through the program “Cuna Más” that offers guidance and orientation in the care and diet of the children.

The program reaches every year an average of 200 children under the age of four, improving their psychomotor, social and linguistic development and protecting them from child malnutrition.

Sustainability and environmental care
This year Camposol will publish its fourth Sustainability Report which measures the company’s progress in terms of economic, social and environmental performance. The report is aligned with the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI), the most important worldwide initiative for the management of such reports. In this year’s edition the company will try to improve with the objective of obtaining the B+ level, verified by an independent third party.

Another ambitious objective for the year 2013 consists of obtaining the important international certification SA 8000, which basically focuses on ensuring good working and health conditions and safety at work.

Camposol has also been developing programs for the protection of the environment, among others, the Integral Conservation Program for the protection of plant and animal species on the company’s estates and the Biological Control Program to reduce the use of pesticides to a minimum. Camposol will also continue to work on the calculation of its carbon footprint and the implementation of the calculation of its water footprint.

Strategic alliances
Camposol allocates a yearly budget to the development of the various CSR programs. However, in order to reach a greater impact, most of the programs are developed via strategic alliances with the community and public and private institutions. For example, the day care center receives the guidance of the “Cuna Más” program of the Ministry of Development and Social Inclusion, and the monitoring program “Niño Sano” (“Healthy Child”) is supported by the Chao health center. The construction of the Nuevo Chao health center was made possible by a strategic alliance between Camposol and several public and private institutions of the Chao district. Camposol contributed with the financing of the infrastructure of the center and still continues to give its support for the implementation.

These are only some examples of the programs that Camposol carries out because the company is convinced that social responsibility is the only way to assure the sustainability of the company and promote the sustainable development of society as a whole.
