"Albert Brouwer: "Rising consumption sweet potatoes"

Netherlands: Asia Express Food starts importing white-fleshed sweet potatoes from Honduras

Asia Express Food started a direct import line of white-fleshed sweet potatoes from Honduras (white on the inside, red on the outside). "The first arrivals are planned in April and after that we will receive a 40-foot container every two weeks," says Albert Brouwer, responsible within Asia Express Food for buying and selling their fruit and vegetable range.

"The white-fleshed sweet potatoes that we get are the Bush Buck variety; we also get orange-fleshed sweet potatoes and bottle gourds from the same supplier," says Albert. "One of the big advantages of direct import is that we no longer depend on others and that we can supply all year round. Since we buy directly from the source, we can compete very well with the market prices."

"We used to buy sweet potatoes locally, but we found that consumption has increased considerably in recent years, so we are very pleased with this import expansion," says Albert. "We sell about 50% of our volumes through the Asian food stores and the rest finds its way to wholesalers and importers, but we can also set up programs with supermarkets. That's very interesting, because our shipping agent is Global GAP certified and we can also do customer specific packaging.
