Reduces weight and firmness loss by up to 40%

Spain: Naturcover, the new natural coating for stone fruit

Decco Ibérica Post-cosecha, in partnership with the Post-harvest Technology Centre of the Valencian Institute for Agricultural Research (IVIA), has developed a new natural coating for stone fruits within the DeccoNatur line. The Naturcover coating reduces weight and firmness loss during the fruit's entire commercial life, resulting in products with maximum quality and freshness.

Ma. Bernardita Pérez Gago, a researcher at IVIA, explains in her article "Nuevo recubrimiento natural para fruta de hueso", that stone fruits, such as plums, nectarines or peaches, have a short post-harvest shelf life and that temperature control is the most effective tool to extend it.

Appearance of plums coated with "Naturcover" compared to an uncoated product after 14 days storage at 1ºC followed by 4 days at 20ºC.

The use of coatings or "waxing" is a common practice to prevent deterioration problems during post-harvest storage of some fruit and vegetables, such as citrus, apples, pears, melons, avocados, mangoes, etc. These coatings create a barrier against water vapour and oxygen, reducing transpiration and thus preventing weight loss by dehydration.

Considering the growing interest in healthier, safer, more natural and environmentally-friendly products, natural coatings have been developed in recent years to avoid the use of synthetic waxes. These coatings, formulated with GRAS substances, such as hydrocolloids and natural waxes, gain even more relevance in fruits consumed unpeeled, towards which consumers are more sensitive.

In commercial terms, Decco Ibérica Post-cosecha has developed a range of fruit coatings within the DeccoNatur line, formulated with food additives authorised by the EU, America and Asia. This facilitates fruit exports and allows for maximum quality and freshness.

The 'Naturcover' coating, developed in partnership with IVIA, reduces both weight and firmness loss by up to 40%, depending on the fruit, variety and storage time.
