Appearance of plums coated with "Naturcover" compared to an uncoated product after 14 days storage at 1ºC followed by 4 days at 20ºC.
The use of coatings or "waxing" is a common practice to prevent deterioration problems during post-harvest storage of some fruit and vegetables, such as citrus, apples, pears, melons, avocados, mangoes, etc. These coatings create a barrier against water vapour and oxygen, reducing transpiration and thus preventing weight loss by dehydration.
Considering the growing interest in healthier, safer, more natural and environmentally-friendly products, natural coatings have been developed in recent years to avoid the use of synthetic waxes. These coatings, formulated with GRAS substances, such as hydrocolloids and natural waxes, gain even more relevance in fruits consumed unpeeled, towards which consumers are more sensitive.
