The Italian product has to compete with Spain

"Egyptian strawberries only have a niche market in Italy"

"People have been talking about importing Egyptian strawberries into Italy for 10 years and, up to 4-5 years ago, they thought it could become a profitable business, as such product is available before Christmas until January, just right for the festive weeks," recalls Raffaele Bucella, Italy sales manager for Granfrutta Zani.

"However, the Spanish product then became available even earlier, thanks to early cultivars and new agronomic techniques, and it reduced the time-frame for Egyptian strawberries. Granfrutta Zani was also importing strawberries from Egypt, though not so much now."

"Egyptian strawberries arrive in Italy by air (in Malpensa - it's quite expensive, but really fast) and by sea (4 to 5 days to Bari, Ancona or Trieste). However, sea travel is not the best way to ship such a perishable product."

The product is sold in all the main markets (wholesalers and retailers) but it is being replaced by Spanish supplies as soon as they are available.

"Egyptian strawberries only have a niche market, whereas exports are bigger in Turkey and other nearby countries. Production costs are really low and conditions are ideal, thanks to the low levels of humidity and sandy soil. In addition, Egyptian companies have the GlobalGAP certification."

Therefore, the Italian product is not in competition with the Egyptian one. "We are affected by competition coming from Spain, as their product is being sold up until April, as it's cheaper than the Italian one."
