South Korea: Nansum GTL looking to expand strawberry market

Spring has arrived in Korea, though for now temperatures are still cold. Last year, some of the country's weather was detrimental to fruit production, as Mr June Kim, of Namsun GTL explains.

"We had typhoons in the main art of the season, which meant that apple and pear volumes were reduced significantly. For example, pears, in the main producing areas were down by 60-70% and apples by around 10-20%.

"Also, prices were too high to export to Europe. We hope this year will be a bumper year."

The strawberry season, which usually runs from January - April has now started. Mr. Kim says, "We are exporting to Indonesia, Malaysia and Hong Kong. The strawberries are shipped when 75% ripe to allow for ripening during transit.

"This year we plan to find new buyers in Europe and Asia."
