Back to the start
Jo mentions that many supermarkets had been planned for the beginning of January, both national and international. "There was a large demand against a lower production in the first week of the new year. When the production started again the demand decreased by the day. Especially on our classical export markets, such as America, the Netherlands, Italy and Switzerland we could sell less. The productions will decrease internationally somewhat from the beginning of March. France as well seems to have passed on the largest volumes. The demand is starting again but only a little. Also America and Canada and even Germany have re-started their demand."
Field chicory
According to the Commercial Manager the chicory field is also doing a little better at the moment. "After a weak period in January and the first half of February trade is doing better now. Local consumers ask for chicory, because the quality is very good at present. It looks beautiful in the shops. The total annual production of chicory at BelOrta fluctuates around 30 million kg. Because of the cooperation of the two auction houses we have a better, more stable supply, which makes supplying bigger customers easier."
Growth in organic
The supply of organic chicory at BelOrta is very large and grew compared to last year. "We have now more space to do various promotions and to export. In the direction of destinations further away, such as America, we will arrange shipments and also in Germany there is a good demand," Jo concludes.
