Italy: Heavy rainfall complicated start of lemon campaign
La Costiera, a benchmark for the vast network of wholesalers in the Italian market, especially in the North and Centre of Italy, supplies a wide number of hyper and supermarkets. It mainly exports to England, Germany and Northern Europe and it even imports from Argentina, South Africa and Spain.
"This year, the main problem during production was heavy rainfall, as well as few hailstorms. Because of this, the produce of those that hadn't carried out copper treatments is now soft, whereas those who didn't place hail nets now have damaged fruits."
"Lemons have therefore ripened late, just like other citrus fruits in Italy. At the moment, lemons are not completely yellow, but that's not the main problem. The effects of heavy rainfall are far more worrying. Currently, demand is only coming from the national market," concludes Ferdinando Vinaccia.
