Italy: Vitroplant's Exploter and Apollo varieties are the flagships of artichoke production

"The product is excellent, thanks to its colour and to the tight bracts. Just when in the Catania plain and in Ramacca, the main areas that produce Sicilian violet artichokes, frost had damaged the produce, the Exploter variety substituted it without any problem, and they are actually appreciated more."

This is what Giuseppe Cupane, chairman of the Sicilian cooperative for Violet Artichokes from Ramacca and administrator of the Rossa di Sicilia P.O., reports as regards the tests on Vitroplant's Exploter artichokes.

"Artichokes are harvested at the beginning of February, and plants have been producing many excellent flower heads. We are thinking of planting artichokes in Ramacca's hill areas rather than in the plain next time, as frost is not as much of a problem there."

"The product has been doing well in Milan and Rimini. However, as we don't have a lot of produce at the moment, we cannot offer it to others. The price is around €0.70 per flower head. Currently, Vitroplant's Exploter and Apollo artichokes are our flagship products."
