"The crisis in the fruit and vegetable sector is tangible. The drop in consumption must be tackled by focusing on a quality product," comments Salvatore Secondulfo, owner of the Secondulfo company, FruitImprese.
"As regards strawberries, supply as well as demand are low. Prices have gone down 5% since last year and this can be linked directly to the economic crisis."
The Candonga and Sabrina varieties are the ones available at the moment, for a total of 25,000 quintals. So far there have been no problems due to the weather.
"We are quite positive, considering that we have increased our production by 20%. Currently, we are researching a couple of new packaging solutions to meet the needs of our clients," continues Secondulfo.
The product is shipped in classic 250, 500 and 1,000 grams trays and in 500 and 1,000 grams single layers. Our main markets is represented by Italian mass retailing and traditional markets, where there's competition coming from Spain and Morocco.
Talking about the future, Secondulfo adds that "we are building the basis on which to develop our company in the next 5 years, thanks to an investment programme that concerns both agricultural production and processing structures."
