Good business for Bruyninckx since launch ‘chiconettes’

"With mini chicory, consumer can enjoy exclusive dish"

Around the year 2000 chicory companies went through some rough times. Instead of throwing in the towel, Frans Bruyninckx made the situation work for him by developing something new and exclusive: the mini chicory, also called the ‘chiconette’. Ever since the 1960s, he specialized in the cultivation of 'ordinary' chicory. "After that, my father and I began to explore a new market and since 2002 we have completely switched to the production of small chicory. The growth we went through since then has been thrilling," says current owner Bart Bruyninckx.

"Retail generally takes 70% of our total volume," says Bart. "Then come the rest of the customers, mainly catering establishments. At food retailer Delhaize, the chiconettes are packed in a bowl with 5 pieces. But we market them in a variety of ways. During fairs we used to present our product through cooking demonstrations. To do this properly, we precooked some of the items at home. As it turned out, this worked out so well that we started doing it for our customers in the hospitality sector."

Bruyninckx is one of the few providers in the Netherlands and Belgium. "Especially at Christmas there’s a huge demand. Everyone wants exclusive products on his plate. Holland though, has still to really warm up to the idea. But we’ll hook them one of these days."
