Brazil: Excess rains affect mango production in São Paulo

Due to low demand and the fruit's poor quality, prices being paid to producers are being cut back.

The excess of rain is affecting the quality of mangoes in the interior of São Paulo (Brazil), and thus prices paid to fruit producers are lowering.

According to the Brazilian Rural Canal, last year a wholesale fruit owner, paid Aguaí region (Brazil) producers around R$ 2.00 per kilo of mango. At the start of this year, according to the owner, it's not possible to pay more than R$ 0.50 per kilo.

There are two reasons for the drop in prices: the lack of buyers and the low quality of the product. Wholesalers, who package and deliver various types of fruit to supermarkets, say that the demand is low and that the buyer demands a superior quality than what they find.

"It is difficult to find buyers and the price isn't good. Last year was better," said the wholesaler.

The situation is even more complicated for those that produce mangoes. Besides facing low prices, producers are watching how the fruits fall from trees because there are no buyers, says the wholesaler.
