Regarding the reason for investing in a central port (as opposed to joining the current trend of decentralisation), Jack Kloosterboer said, "Rotterdam is still the first port of call in Europe. In order to maintain this position, we want to ensure proper facilities for reefer containers. The containers arrive at the place of destination either way, but in our terminal there are no additional shipping costs. A VWA inspection point is part of the Cool Port concept. Normally, when cargo is transported to existing cold stores, you spend at least 150 Euro in transport and post-transport. That’s about 6 Euro per pallet. With Rotterdam Cool Port, traffic from terminal to cold storage is done away with, saving at least 150 Euro."
According to Kloosterboer, this makes Rotterdam Cool Port appealing for both short-and long-term storage. "Ultimately customers want to reduce costs in the chain, and with Rotterdam Cool Port we cut a portion of those costs by creating a shortcut. These services we provide for customers who purchase services from existing cold stores, but also for the stores themselves.
