Peru: Agrícola San José plans to increase production

With lands in northern Peru, Agrícola San Jose produces table grapes and organic bananas for export. Although performing well in the US market, its goals include an expansion of its plantations and an attempt to take a firmer grip on its fruit exports.

Agrícola San José produces organic bananas on 130 hectares in the region of Piura, in northern Peru. The region is very suitable for banana growing due to its weather, pointed out Renato Nagaro.

"The greatest advantage that we have is the low rainfall; it is sporadic," said Nagaro. "The absence of sigatoka is also good for us." These advantages, as well as the firm's organic certification, have led to great business opportunities overseas.

"At the moment, all our exports are shipped to the United States," said Nagaro. "But we are studying the possibility of exporting to Japan." Furthermore, the firm seeks to take full control of its banana exports, as it currently depends on another company to export its bananas to other markets.

In addition to bananas, the firm also grows table grapes of the Red Globe, Crimson and Superior varieties on 180 hectares. In the case of table grapes, Agrícola San José has full control on all exports, and just like with bananas, the firm has plans to export to European markets and Japan, as well as to expand its plantations.

"This year we have plans for another 200 hectares for grapes and a little more for bananas," said Nagaro. "We will continue with what we are currently doing, but we will also increase our direct exports."
