Kiwi Uno:

"Italy : In Piedmont, this year, 70% of the product missing"

Gualtiero Rivoira (pictured), group Rivoira - Kiwi One, one of the most representative of the province of Cuneo (Piedmont - Italy), which has been operating in fruit for three generations, says, "In our region, this year, about 70% of the product is missing. We were able to offset this by receiving some kiwi from the area of Verona and Calabria in Italy, Greece and increasing amounts from Latina (Italy), where for many years we have had a collection center."

Kiwi Uno has so far handled 30% of the stored product, which exceeds 15,000 tons.

With regard to commercial performance, Gualtiero points out, "The prices of kiwi are currently stable. At the beginning of 2013 we have tried to increase prices a little, but with no result. Generally, the kiwi is still more expensive than in 2011/12, but not so much as the lack of product would suggest."

"The economic crisis is being felt," Gualtiero continues, "Sales in Europe are very slow and the competition by Greece on Eastern European markets is very strong, so much so that our exports to those destinations have been, up to now, non-existent and only this week we started to ship there, in small quantities."

Other major international destinations for Kiwi Uno include: Arab countries, South Africa, Malaysia, India, Mauritius, China, Taiwan, Australia, New Zealand, Canada, USA, Costa Rica, Colombia, Argentina, Brazil. "The next market for this season will be South Korea," reports Gualtiero.

Responding instead to what is claimed by the Belgian Exofi about a reducing in the sizes of kiwi in recent years, Gualtiero Rivoira comments: "I do not see that product of large caliber (23+, for instance) is lacking this year, sizes are well distributed. Let's say the larger fruits are required only in certain markets, especially Spain, Italy, South America and Australia, while the eastern countries buy kiwi of smaller caliber."

The Rivoira Kiwi-Uno group will exhibit at Fruit Logistica (Berlin, 6-8 February 2013), in Hall. 2.2, Stand B-02.
