Israel: BT9 simplifies cold chain monitoring

Just about every produce company has realized the importance of integrating effective cold chain monitoring on the bottom line. But with more monitoring comes more data, and extra information does not automatically lead to better insights. It takes analysis and interpretation of that information to yield actionable insights. BT9's XsenseÒ end-to-end cold chain management aims to provide those kinds of insights with their traceability solutions.

“The next big and significant development we're going to introduce during the Fruit Logistica Berlin exhibition is a cold chain scoring system,” said BT9's CEO, Ben-Tzur. The scoring system evaluates cold chain logistics and gives the process a score based on criteria such as temperature fluctuations and their related fresh produce sensitivities to temperatures. That score can help companies determine the efficiency of their cold chain management systems and shed light on areas which can be improved.

“Additionally, we provide a nutritional degradation score, which is a function of respiration rates, physiology, time, and the Cold Chain Score,” said Ben-Tzur. The scores range from a perfect score of ten (10) to the lowest score of one (1). Data can be automatically sent when those scores drop below an acceptable threshold, so participants all along the cold chain can take action to prevent spoilage. Ben-Tzur added that the accuracy of the information is very important, which is why BT9 provides reporting all the way down to the pallet level. With that granular level of reporting, growers, shippers and retailers can be sure that they know exactly what's happening with the produce that's being shipped.

“The technology we have and the different types of information we can provide is unparalleled,” said Ben-Tzur. “You can see everything in real time and we can provide patterns of risk for benchmarking.” That combination of real-time reporting with post-shipment analysis is the end-to-end system that is most cost-effective, added Ben-Tzur, and with customers in over 35 countries and a large growth in sales over the past few years, many customers agree.

“It's expensive to not care about how much waste you have, and it's cost-effective to have a very good traceability system like ours,” said Ben-Tzur. “The question is: how much waste and how much risk are you willing to take on? With our system, the return on investment is very significant.”
