Produce companies Frutas Pejose and Zyrfresh have joined the list of firms in the sector that have ended up in insolvency proceedings, a trend that in recent years has been behind many of the corporate bankruptcies recorded in the Region of Murcia.
In recent months, the insolvency filings of Frutas y Verduras El Monarca, which was a necessary filing, and those of Grupo Alifruit Sabor de la Tierra and Hispa Group Spain, which were voluntary, had already come to light. Before them, other companies with a strong presence in the region went through the same situation, including El NiƱo del Campo Agroherni, Natural Salads Agromem, and Gruventa.
Zyrfresh, with more than 300 hectares of production spread across the southeastern peninsula of Castilla La Mancha and Morocco, closed 2023 with sales of 1.6 million euros and liabilities of 1.4 million. That year, it had fourteen workers. The insolvency proceeding was declared in September, barely one year after opening a Colombia branch focused on tropical fruit exports. At that point, debts had already climbed to 5.4 million euros. The Commercial Court number 2 of Murcia has now ordered the conclusion of the proceeding due to insufficient active assets.
In the case of Frutas Pejose, based in Santomera, the figures are smaller but still reflect a fragile situation. Its 2024 sales dropped by 35% to 747,000 euros, while its total liabilities grew by 82% reaching 271,000 euros.
