Mozambique banana unit disrupted by power outages

Operations at a banana production and processing unit in Guijá, Mozambique, are being disrupted by an unstable electricity supply with frequent power cuts. Managers at The African Food Company, based in Chivongoene, report an estimated 20 outages per day, affecting the operation of irrigation systems and processing equipment.

These issues were presented on Wednesday in Chivongoene to the Gaza governor, Margarida Mapanzene, who visited the Guijá district as part of monitoring activities under the Economic and Social Plan. Governor Mapanzene acknowledged the problem but did not outline the measures the provincial government intends to take.

During the visit, she noted the company's current production structure and the broader local impact of its activities. "It is encouraging to see a company producing, processing, and marketing its entire product chain locally. We recommend they continue to expand production areas to fully satisfy the domestic market and, in the future, strengthen export capacity," she said.

Company data shared during the meeting shows that The African Food Company cultivates 115 hectares of bananas out of 600 hectares owned. The operation employs 250 workers, including both permanent and seasonal staff.
