Minister of Agriculture hails new South Africa citrus export record

South Africa's Ministry of Agriculture has acknowledged the citrus industry's report of a record 2025 export season, with 203.4 million 15 kg cartons shipped to international markets. The volume represents a 22 per cent increase compared with the packed-for-export figure in 2024 and exceeds earlier seasonal estimates.

Minister of Agriculture John Steenhuisen noted the outcome and said it reflects the work of growers, workers, and industry structures. South Africa remains the world's second-largest citrus exporter after Spain, with two-thirds of national citrus production shipped as fresh fruit. These exports account for about 95 per cent of total citrus revenue and support employment across the sector.

The citrus value chain is described by the Ministry as the largest agricultural export segment by value. Steenhuisen said the department will maintain collaboration with the industry in areas such as logistics, market access, and export retention.
