Erik-Jan Thur, Marni Fruit:

"When it gets colder, people naturally start eating more citrus"

"Demand for citrus has been very quiet in recent weeks, entirely in line with the whole market situation. Meanwhile, fortunately, demand is starting to pick up a bit. We sold a bit with the brakes on, because sales were so slack, but are now letting some more come in," Erik-Jan Thur of Marni Fruit from Barendrecht explains.

"Currently, we are selling Lorentina leaf mandarins under our King's brand. These are running nicely. Prices are between 12 and 13 euros. The same goes for the leaf mandarins, which we get from Pardo. This week we also start with the first Clementines from Morocco, some of which we are also getting in from Pitufo," the importer continues.

"Oranges are not that many on the market yet. Meanwhile, we have started with the first Spanish Navelinas. Especially the large sizes (36-48) are running very well. After all, hand oranges are not that many from overseas anymore. Prices are between 15 and 16 euros."

"We also started with the first Spanish Primofiori lemons. These are of a neat quality, and the prices are good, but the market is not too hot yet. Prices of 25-27 euros are actually a bit too high for the nice volumes to sell. Qualitatively, the lemons are definitely worth it."

Last but not least, the persimmon supply is also in full swing. "Sales of the larger sizes are running nicely. We offer these one-layer laid (12/14/16) in our own brand, King's. The smaller sizes are a bit harder to sell, but with the right price, there is a reaction to be created in the market," says Erik-Jan.

St Nicholas traditionally does not create that much extra demand for citrus among Marni Fruit's customers. "We would rather see that at Christmas when our customers bring an extra box of Pitufo to their customers," says Erik-Jan. He holds out hope for a market upturn. "We have had very mild weather with high temperatures in recent weeks, and when it gets colder, people start eating citrus."
