Chinese fruit and vegetable imports monitored across Russian regions

Since the beginning of 2025, Russian plant quarantine authorities have inspected large shipments of fruits and vegetables from China in different regions.

Amur Region
The Amur branch of the Federal Center for Plant Quarantine and Seed Control (FGBU "NCBRSP") tested more than 5.3 tonnes of fresh figs, 128.6 tonnes of celery, as well as tomatoes, peppers, and other vegetables. Entomological checks found no quarantine pests in figs and celery. A batch of 222 kg of tomatoes was found infected with Tomato brown rugose fruit virus (ToBRFV). In total, 34 cases of tomato and pepper infections were recorded this year, totaling over 34.5 tonnes.

On November 7, 20 tonnes of fresh strawberries infected with Western flower thrips were intercepted; the shipment was prohibited from entering the Russian market and will be destroyed.

Compared to last year, imports from China to the Amur Region increased: fresh figs by +81%, and celery by +20.5%.

Zabaykalsky Krai
From January 1 to October 31, 2025, over 235,000 tonnes of plant quarantine products were controlled at the TLT-Zabaykalsk warehouse, including lettuce, cabbage, peppers, grapes, pears, pineapples, mangoes, apples, zucchini, nectarines, peaches, and potatoes. Laboratory tests detected 11 types of quarantine pests, including Western flower thrips (144 cases), Comstock mealybug (115 cases), Palm thrips (50 cases), Oriental fruit moth (40 cases), ToBRFV in tomatoes (27 cases), and peach fruit moth (4 cases). Occasional detections also included potato spindle tuber viroid, brown rot (Monilinia spp.), South American tomato pinworm, oriental fruit fly, and Oriental mealybug. 58.5 tonnes and 288,200 units of infected products were returned, 14,500 tonnes were disinfected, while the remainder was cleared for circulation.

Kamchatka
Since the beginning of the year, approximately 2,000 tonnes of fruits and vegetables, including potatoes, have been inspected at the Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky seaport. 78.9 tonnes of Chinese potatoes and 50 tonnes from Belarus were checked. Two contamination cases were recorded: Western flower thrips in cauliflower and cherry fruit moth in apricots; the infected 1.2 tonnes were destroyed.

Compared to last year, imports of Chinese fruits and vegetables to Kamchatka increased nearly fourfold.

Primorsky Krai
On October 31, the Primorsky branch of FGBU "NCBRSP" confirmed ToBRFV in a batch of fresh hot peppers from China. Out of 3.3 tonnes inspected, 80 kg were infected; the shipment was blocked and will be destroyed. This year, the virus has been detected 25 times in tomatoes and peppers, with a total of 6.6 tonnes destroyed.
