Hebei's fresh pear production declined by 10%, but exports to Indonesia rebounded

The 2025 fresh pear harvest concluded in October. This year, overall fresh pear production in Hebei Province was significantly lower than last year, primarily due to a 50% reduction in the output of Ya pears and Xuehua pears, while Huangguan pear production was less affected. Weather conditions during the growing season caused more surface defects on the fruit, reducing the marketable yield.

Hebei Xionghan Agricultural Products Inc., which integrates fresh pear planting, processing, and export, reported that this season's purchase prices followed a "high initial price, low closing" trend. Manager Li, the company's sales manager, explained: "Prices were high at the start of the harvest but gradually fell as the season progressed, and overall market performance was below expectations."

Li noted that, based on this year's warehousing situation, wholesalers and distributors generally kept low inventory levels due to the weak market in the previous season and the current economic environment. "Meanwhile, prices declined in the later stages of harvesting, prompting fruit farmers to withhold sales and store their produce in warehouses, hoping for a price rebound. High early purchase prices and market uncertainty also made some export companies more cautious in procurement, resulting in lower early storage volumes compared to previous years."

Exports experienced a temporary setback earlier in the year. Li explained that on June 30, the Indonesian government's COA accreditation for Chinese laboratories expired, and re-authorization was not completed until mid-August. This caused exports of Chinese fresh pears and other fruits and vegetables to Indonesia to almost come to a standstill throughout July. "This event directly affected shipment volumes that month and also had a certain impact on domestic purchase prices during the same period."

With the restoration of COA laboratory accreditation, exports of Hebei fresh pears to Indonesia have resumed growth, with both volume and prices increasing. Demand in the Indonesian market has rebounded, and demand from Central Asia and the Middle East has also risen significantly this year.

Li believes that while domestic market demand has slowed, if no unforeseen policy changes occur in the export sector, overall fresh pear sales should remain relatively stable. "Currently, our company's exports continue to grow, with particularly strong performance in the South American, Middle Eastern, and Central Asian markets, driven by robust demand."
