Farmers in Turkey's Pasinler Valley, located in the eastern Erzurum province, have completed their cabbage harvest with individual heads exceeding 50 kilograms. The crop was cultivated across 500 hectares, with growers reporting higher-than-expected yields this season.
Producers attribute the large cabbage size to the use of locally developed "special seeds." While average weights were expected to range between 15 and 25 kilograms, some fields produced cabbages surpassing 50 kilograms.

Hasbi Dursun, a 65-year-old farmer from Pasinler, said he achieved a yield of 57 kilograms per cabbage. "My goal is to produce 80 kilograms of cabbage next season. If I live, I aim to produce another 100 kilograms," he said, adding that the seeds are locally produced.
Another grower, Numan Sertoglu, said cabbages of this size can only be cultivated in Pasinler. "Our seeds are heirloom seeds. We cultivate and plant them ourselves. The secret to the quality of our cabbage is our heirloom seeds. We believe these seeds are over 100 years old," he said.
Farmers in the region continue to rely on traditional cultivation methods, using locally preserved seed varieties that have been passed down for generations. The Pasinler Valley's soil structure and climate are regarded as suitable for producing large brassica crops, and growers expect to expand production in the coming season.
