Australian avocado rootstock enters global testing phase

Innovar Global and Horticulture Innovation Australia (HIA) have entered into a global licensing partnership to develop and commercialise the Australian-bred Procado® (SHSR-04) avocado rootstock in key markets worldwide. The collaboration aims to evaluate the rootstock's performance across major avocado-producing regions, with a focus on yield potential, tree structure, and resistance to Phytophthora.

Procado, developed through research supported by HIA, has been licensed to three nurseries in Australia since 2020. The rootstock is already in use within the domestic industry, with early data suggesting improved yield efficiency compared with Dusa, greater Phytophthora resistance in replant sites, and reduced tree vigour when grafted with common commercial varieties such as Hass and Sheppard.

HIA, a grower-owned not-for-profit corporation representing Australia's horticulture sector, supports the development of new technologies through research, marketing, and trade initiatives. The global partnership with Innovar will secure intellectual property rights for Procado® and enable international testing to determine its commercial potential.

Innovar Global, part of the Freshmax Group, specialises in the licensing and international development of fruit varieties, including avocados, apples, pears, cherries, and berries, across markets in Australia, New Zealand, the United States, and South America.

According to the organisations, the project aligns with growing international demand for avocados. Global production reached 10.47 million metric tonnes in 2023, an increase of 10% from the previous year, with the total market value expected to reach US$26.04 billion by 2030.

Over the coming months, Innovar and HIA will coordinate the transfer of plant material and initiate trials with international partners to assess performance in diverse growing environments.
