Azerbaijan's apple exports reached 100,000 tons in 2024

Apples are among the main fruit crops in Azerbaijan, with strong demand both locally and internationally. The country's geography and climate support wide-scale cultivation, positioning it as a growing player in the regional apple trade.

Azerbaijan is one of the leading producers of apples in the Caucasus region, supported by diverse topography and favorable climatic conditions for multiple varieties. Production areas are concentrated in the Caucasus Mountains and northern regions, where fertile soils and moderate weather contribute to stable yields. Over the past five years, production has increased steadily due to investment in modern agriculture and improved storage and packaging systems.

Between 2020 and 2024, apple production rose from 210,000 tons to 270,000 tons, an annual increase of about 6–8%. This growth is linked to technological improvements and government support for growers.

Exports represent an expanding part of Azerbaijan's apple industry. The main export destinations include Russia, Georgia, Turkey, the UAE, and several Gulf and Eastern European countries. Export volumes grew from 70,000 tons in 2020, valued at approximately US$45 million, to 100,000 tons in 2024, valued at US$71 million. Russia remains the leading market, with trade also diversifying toward Eastern Europe and the Middle East.

Exporters must obtain quality and phytosanitary certificates, comply with modern packaging standards, and use refrigerated transport to maintain product integrity. Collaboration with certified logistics and customs agents is also a key requirement for international shipments. Azerbaijani apples are known in importing markets for their uniform coloration, firm texture, and tolerance for long-distance transport.

Imports are limited but occur during off-season periods or when specific varieties are unavailable locally. Azerbaijan imports apples mainly from Iran, Turkey, and some European countries to meet domestic demand.

Opportunities in Azerbaijan's apple sector include product diversity, government support for producers and exporters, and the expansion of key markets in Russia and the Gulf. However, challenges persist, including competition from large producers such as Poland and Turkey, the need for a more efficient cold chain, compliance with strict quality requirements, and fluctuations in exchange rates and logistics costs.

Experts recommend that investors study target markets, focus on packaging and cold storage technologies, and work with trusted local and international partners to improve reliability and efficiency in trade operations.
