Gino van Lin, Frankort&Koning:

"Challenging start to Brazilian melon season as European stocks weigh on market"

The Brazilian melon season had a somewhat difficult start this year. "As early as week 37, there was good availability of almost all types of Brazilian melons on the European market. Compared to previous years, even larger volumes arrived in the first weeks of the season. At the same time, European production lasted longer than usual. This overlap created a temporary oversupply, leading to price pressure and slow sales in several European countries. We clearly felt the effects of those surpluses up to and including last week," said Gino van Lin.

Current prices for watermelons are around €0.70 per kilo. Yellow melons are selling for €0.85/kg, Galia and Cantaloupe for €1.40, Charentais for €1.60, and Piel de Sapo for €1.20/kg.

"Meanwhile, the situation appears to be turning. The old stocks in Europe have largely been cleared, which has directly created more stable pricing and a better market balance," the importer continued. "Despite the difficult start, we remain optimistic about the coming weeks. We expect a more positive market balance now that supply is more in line with demand, even though November has historically been a challenging month for the melon trade."
