India's fresh apple imports are reaching new highs with the marketing year 2025/26 poised to see over 50% higher arrivals than last year, says Santosh Chauhan of Chauhan EXIM, a Mumbai-based fresh fruit importer-exporter. "This substantial increase is translating to strong, consistent availability across most major wholesale markets and retail channels, especially for premium imported varieties."

According to Chauhan, "There is access to a wide selection, including Red Delicious, Fuji, Royal Gala, Granny Smith, and other club and value-oriented varieties such as Qinguan, Huaniu, Cripps Pink, and Pacific Rose." He highlights major origins and an evolving varietal mix: "We're seeing Iran's share of imports reach over one-third this season, with Turkey, Poland, New Zealand, and South Africa also maintaining strong supplies. Varieties like Cripps Pink and Pacific Rose appeal to premium retail, but the value segment, represented by apples from Iran and Turkey, is creating diverse price points for consumers."

Pricing trends continue to evolve as the import sector grows. Chauhan shares that since May 2023, imports below USD 0.6 per kilogram CIF have been restricted, and the prevailing 50% duty remains in place. "Landed costs currently range from USD 1.25 to 1.5 per kg for Iranian apples to USD 2.1 to 2.7 per kg for USA fruit," he explains, with retail prices varying depending on city, variety, and origin. "The influx of lower-cost apples from markets like Iran and Turkey is narrowing the price gap with domestic premium apples, which intensifies competition and puts pressure on trading margins. Premium imported varieties, however, are fetching higher rates in urban retail."

Looking ahead, Chauhan mentions that the fundamentals of India's imported apple market remain positive. He notes that domestic apple production in the northern states is growing but still cannot fully meet demand, especially for premium quality fruit. "With import volumes at historic highs, competitive pricing, and broader origin diversification, Indian consumers can expect a vibrant availability of imported apples through the rest of 2025 and beyond."
