Dynamic consumption of organic produce, but negative balance for producers

While organic consumption continues to rise, the number of organic producers is falling for the first time, according to figures from Agence Bio.

First half of 2025: dynamic consumption
By mid-2025, organic home consumption was up by 4.1% in sales. While the strongest growth concerns organic and local produce (direct sales) with +8.8% and organic stores with +6.2%, organic sales in supermarkets are also up by 1.4% for the first time since 2021.

The share of the organic market and organic production in France is 82%, excluding tropical products. With tropical products, the figure is 71% (Agence Bio 2024 figures).

A negative balance for producers for the first time
While the consumer demand for organic produce made in France increases, the number of farms involved in organic production is down for the first time. In September 2025, the balance between new entrants and those leaving certification was negative for the first time, with more farms stopping than starting up since January 2025.

In August 2025, there were 2696 new entrants and 2861 leaving the organic segment, a balance of -165 producers.

While organic acreage has decreased over the last 2 years, the number of producers has risen. The upturn in consumption is nonetheless giving us hope that these figures will be reversed, so that the effects can be felt over the next 2 to 3 years, since organic production requires 2 to 3 years of conversion, depending on the product.

Farmers keeping to their organic vocation in a difficult context
Agence Bio also took advantage of the 10th Tech&Bio trade show to present the results of the 2nd edition of the barometer of organic farmers' satisfaction.

The 2025 Barometer of Organic Farmers' Satisfaction reveals that organic farmers are deeply attached to organic farming. 93% of them say they are proud to be organic, and 86% believe that organic farming contributes to their personal well-being, a figure that has remained stable since the 2023 edition despite the crisis in the organic sector. When asked what they would like to see in the future, 92% of farmers feel that the public needs to be better informed about the organic label, its guarantees and advantages, while 89% expect fair remuneration for their products and the services they provide to society.
