First Rule Extension for Spanish avocado and mango sector presented at Fruit Attraction

The Spanish Avocado and Mango Interprofessional Organization (OIAM) has presented its first Rule Extension, approved by Order APA/837/2025, of July 23, and published in the Official State Gazette on August 2, in the framework of the international fair Fruit Attraction 2025. The presentation was carried out by the entity's president, Mr. José Linares Pérez; its vice-president, Mr. Juan Antonio Reyes Gutiérrez, and board member Mr. Luis Marín, and has been made possible thanks to Cajamar, which lent part of its stand to host the event.

The application of the Rule Extension is a historic milestone for the avocado and mango sector in Spain, as the whole sector is now, for the first time, connected under a common instrument that ensures stable resources for collective actions of general interest.

The Rule Extension establishes a total contribution of 0.02 €/kg for avocado and mango produced in Spain, distributed as follows:

  • Producer sector: 0.01 €/kg for avocados and mangoes produced in Spain and sold to a commercial operator or delivered by a member to their cooperative.
  • Marketing sector: 0.01 €/kg for avocados and mangoes purchased or delivered by a member in their cooperative.

The measure will run from 2025 to 2028, during which time it will allow the funding of strategic projects aimed at:

  • Promotion of Spanish avocados and mangoes in national and international markets.
  • Generating knowledge and improving information about the sector and its products, aiming to increase domestic consumption and highlight their nutritional and health benefits.
  • Sustainability and innovation, with R&D&I programs aimed at optimizing production and promoting technological innovation and a responsible management of water resources, ensuring the application of sustainable agricultural practices and reducing their environmental impact.

During the presentation, OIAM president Mr. José Linares Pérez said: "The implementation of the Rule Extension represents a qualitative leap in the valorization of our products. It will strengthen their position in international markets and offer greater guarantees to consumers in terms of quality, sustainability, and traceability. It also represents a clear commitment to the sector's unity, as only by working together can we face the challenges ahead in terms of competitiveness, sustainability, and the opening up of new markets."

For his part, vice-president Juan Antonio Reyes said: "This has been possible thanks to the whole sector, including producers and marketers, joining forces. Everyone understands the need for joint action with common objectives. By working together, we can face these challenges with greater strength, cohesion, and vision for the future." He also underlined that "the agreed contribution of 1 cent per kilo for each party involved is an insignificant amount compared to the benefits it can bring to the sector as a whole in the medium and long term."

To wrap things up, Mr. Luis Marín said, "This new milestone is going to have a great impact on the sector. Promoting the product and its consumption, offering accurate information about the sector, and investing in R+D+i are essential for its growth and consolidation."
