Maersk opens cold chain hub in Olmos

A.P. Moller – Maersk has launched a new packing and cold chain logistics center in Olmos, located in Peru's Lambayeque region. The development aims to improve supply chain efficiency for the country's growing agro-export sector, particularly fresh fruit.

The Olmos site is positioned in a major agricultural area and is designed as a multi-product logistics hub. According to Peru's National Institute of Statistics and Informatics (INEI), the Lambayeque region recorded notable export growth in 2024, including a 35.7% increase in blueberry exports and a 29.2% rise in avocado exports. The new facility is adjacent to major plantations and integrates processing, cold storage, and depot warehousing operations. It connects directly to Maersk's broader logistics network and also offers services such as inland refrigerated transport and customs handling.

The 17,500-square-meter center is designed to manage the post-harvest process for avocados, blueberries, and mangoes. Capabilities include processing up to 38 tons per hour for avocados and mangoes and 4.5 tons per hour for blueberries. Storage space includes over 4,600 bins and two chambers for finished goods with 2,088 pallet positions. Seven cooling tunnels are included, as well as systems for rapid temperature stabilization. Additional features include five loading docks, 420 container slots, 210 plug-in points, automated packing, and inventory management systems.

The facility includes measures to support environmental sustainability, such as electrified equipment and on-site water treatment. Solar panels are scheduled for installation in 2026 to reduce emissions. Maersk estimates the facility will handle over 10,000 tons of produce in its first year, with goals to enhance product handling efficiency and reduce post-harvest loss.
