Bravo apple harvest up 25% as demand grows

Australian growers of the deep burgundy Bravo apple are set to harvest approximately 25% more fruit this season, with increased volumes reaching east coast supermarket shelves this winter. The boost reflects rising consumer demand for the white-fleshed apple, known for its sweet flavor and long shelf life.

Jenny Mercer, Managing Director of fresh fruit supplier WA Farm Direct—the licensed marketer for Bravo apples in Australia—said the higher yield was due to additional plantings and maturing orchards. "Plantings are increasing in all key growing states with plans to support both domestic and export markets over the next decade," she said. "Some trees are in full production while others are still maturing."

Nearly 300 hectares of the ANABP 01 variety, which produces Bravo apples, are under cultivation by about 85 growers across Western Australia, New South Wales, Queensland, South Australia, and Victoria. "Our growers are the lead characters in the Bravo story. Their apple-growing expertise, passed down through generations and supported by advanced technologies, is central to the brand's success," Mercer said.

WA Farm Direct ensures quality and consistency across regions through strict standards, variety training, and technology. Apples are hand-picked, maturity-tested, and either packed on site or at centralised facilities. Orchards use netting to shield crops from pests and weather, while packing houses employ infrared grading and scanners to ensure fruit is market-ready.

Bravo apples debuted in Western Australia in 2016 and have been available in limited volumes on the east coast since 2019. With their dark burgundy skin and white flesh that resists browning, they are a household name in WA and gaining popularity nationally.

The harvest begins in March–April in Western Australia and Queensland, finishing in May in New South Wales and Victoria. Apples are stored in controlled atmosphere conditions for distribution from April to December.

ANABP 01 was bred in 1992 by Australian apple breeder John Cripps and developed by the National Apple Breeding Program. A cross between Cripps Red and Royal Gala, it was selected for flavour, colour, and storage life.

Bravo apples are among the highest flavonoid-rich apples grown in Australia, with most health-promoting compounds found in the skin. Their high antioxidant levels and low browning make them ideal for fresh consumption. Premium apples feature a brix level of 14–18%, contributing to their sweet, complex taste.

"These unique qualities are attracting growing export interest, particularly in Asia and the Middle East," Mercer said. Bravo apples are available nationally from May to December.
