Today marks two decades since Richard van den Dolder launched his own business from the attic of his home, starting with just a laptop and a phone. What began as a solo venture has since grown into Inverness Transport, a company specializing in agricultural and commodity transport with operations across Europe.

Van den Dolder previously worked as a commercial manager at a transport firm focused on potatoes, onions, and carrots. When the company's owner stepped down, Van den Dolder proposed splitting responsibilities—he would manage commercial activities, while the owner continued with transport. Although the arrangement was short-lived, it set the stage for his independent venture.
In naming the company, Van den Dolder drew inspiration from Scotland. He explained that "Inverness," the capital of the Scottish Highlands, conveyed an international and resilient image—qualities he wanted reflected in the business.

Starting in Zevenaar, the company now has a team of six and serves a diverse client base. Agricultural transport, particularly potatoes for supermarket packing centers, still represents a significant portion of operations—about 40% of freight. The company also transports commodities like cocoa and coffee, which require specialized handling. Its fleet includes tautliners, refrigerated trailers, and bulk trucks, with customs services managed internally for destinations including the UK and Switzerland.
Inverness saw notable growth during the COVID-19 pandemic, driven by increased at-home food consumption. That momentum has continued in subsequent years.
Since 2020, Richard's son Mark van den Dolder has joined the business, leading the planning department while Richard oversees commercial activities. Mark's involvement marks the beginning of a generational shift, with plans for him to eventually take over the business entirely.
Future developments include the construction of a new office and further team expansion, reflecting the company's continued focus on structured growth within the agricultural logistics sector.
