In the Rangpur agricultural region, onion production reached a record level during the 2024-2025 Rabi season, with farmers cultivating the crop on 10,223 hectares and producing 119,811 tons. This marks an increase from the previous seasons, where 118,491 tons and 104,263 tons were produced from 10,006 and 8,834 hectares, respectively.
The Department of Agricultural Extension (DAE) set a target of 121,151 tons from 10,149 hectares, which was surpassed by 74 hectares. As a result, the region saw an average yield rate of 11.72 tons per hectare. Market prices for locally produced onions range from USD 0.51 to USD 0.56 per kilogram.
The interim government's initiatives to boost self-reliance in onion production have included the distribution of free quality seeds and fertilizers, encouraging farmers to expand cultivation. The DAE, Spices Research Institute, and other organizations are actively working to further enhance production to meet local demand.
In the market, vegetable trader Md. Hafizur Rahman reported that farmers are selling onions to wholesalers at USD 17.86 to USD 21.39 per maund, while retailers purchase them at similar rates. Retail prices for consumers range between USD 0.51 and USD 0.56 per kilogram, depending on size and quality.
