Postuma takes 50 customers on a study trip to Sicily

Last Monday, 3 March, the Postuma company departed for Sicily with 50 customers on a study trip. Fresh produce specialists, wholesalers and market traders, catering suppliers, and farm shop entrepreneurs gathered at the airport for an inspiring journey. Sjoerd Postuma reports:

"Upon arrival, we immediately set course for our first destination, visiting the company Le Rosse del Etna, with which Postuma has a direct partnership for the renowned Sicilian blood oranges under the Anima Rossa brand. A truly unique and flavorful product that has already generated significant interest. By expanding knowledge about this product, that interest can only grow. This was the reason for organizing this study trip!

We received a warm welcome, and the tours of the packing station and later the orchards where these fruits grow were highly informative. The team at Le Rosse, Carlo, and Francesco, were open to all questions and provided valuable insights to enhance the visitors' professional knowledge. Naturally, Postuma will continue to highlight this exceptional, high-quality product that deserves more recognition.

After taking a group photo and enjoying a hearty lunch, the day progressed quickly, and we checked into the hotel. The next morning, everyone had to rise early (04:00) to visit Sicily's central wholesale market. Known as M.A.A.S., this is where the vast majority of Sicily's fresh produce products are traded. The impressively large hall, home to 84 established companies, made a strong impression on the visitors.

There were numerous wholesalers and an equally large number of buyers, loading their goods using all kinds of transport methods. It was a fascinating experience to witness. The market was also unique in terms of its products—upon entering, it was immediately clear which season we were in. During this visit, there was an especially large supply of artichokes, alongside a wide range of locally grown vegetables and herbs, which was a remarkable sight. Of course, Sicilian production is complemented by products from around the world, allowing each trader to assemble a complete selection.

The many traders at M.A.A.S. were surprised by our visit—it's not every day that a bus full of professionals enters the hall. We were warmly welcomed and received answers to every question we asked. Once again, there was a great deal to learn, especially about the enthusiasm with which local products are celebrated. "Fresh trade with flavor" is the motto here, and perfection in appearance is not the priority. There is also a strong focus on seasonal products, which is a key feature of this market.

After this, there was still time for a visit to Mount Etna, the source of Sicily's fertile soil, as well as a stop in Taormina, a tourist town on the coast. After a farewell dinner, the group flew back on Wednesday. With newfound knowledge and inspiration, everyone returned home, eager to share their insights with employees, customers, and colleagues—bringing back not just a great story but also valuable expertise!"
