Brazil opens market for Korean strawberry exports after 8 years

The Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs Quarantine Headquarters announced the conclusion of export quarantine negotiations for Korean strawberries to Brazil. After eight years of discussions with Brazilian plant quarantine authorities, the import quarantine requirements took effect last month, allowing Korean strawberries to enter the Brazilian market.

Strawberries rank among the top 10 fresh agricultural exports from Korea, with approximately 4,000 tons shipped annually to Singapore, Hong Kong, and Thailand. The Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs anticipates that this development will aid in broadening the global market reach for Korean strawberries.

To export strawberries to Brazil, cultivation greenhouses and line managers must register with the quarantine headquarters before planting. There must be strict management to prevent pests that concern the Brazilian government. Additionally, strawberries must undergo plantation and export quarantine procedures.

The quarantine headquarters plans to implement "Korea's export quarantine guidelines for raw strawberries from Korea to Brazil" within the first half of the year, aligning with Brazil's import requirements.

"This negotiation is significant in that Korean strawberries will be exported to Latin American countries for the first time," said Kim Jung-hee, head of the Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs Quarantine Division. "We expect it to be a bridgehead for entry into the Latin American market with 600 million people."
