In a move to enhance the export volume of fresh fruits to Kenya, Uganda is engaging with hoteliers along the Kenyan Coast. During a recent address, Uganda's Consul General in Mombasa, Paul Mukumbya, highlighted the opportunities presented by the East Africa Community (EAC) trade agreement for Kenyan tourist hotels to import fruits from Uganda.
Mukumbya pointed out that Uganda produces pineapples year-round, yet a significant portion of these fruits remains unutilised. He noted the case of a pineapple processing factory in Kwale County, which had to shut down due to a shortage of fruits, but was able to resume operations after securing a steady supply from Uganda. Traditionally, many hoteliers and ship handlers in Kenya have sourced their fruits from distant markets like South Africa.
