Turkish tomato farmers protest disparity between production costs and selling prices

In Bandirma district, Balikesir, Turkey, tomato producers initiated a march to Ankara, utilizing tractors to obstruct roads in protest against rising costs and insufficient purchase prices. Originating from Aksakal village, these farmers are facing challenges with unsold tomatoes and have sought intervention from the Ministry of Agriculture to rectify their situation. The core of their discontent lies in the disparity between production costs and the selling prices, which has led to financial hardships and surplus crops.

The collective statement from the farmers addressed misconceptions about their equipment, advocating for support towards domestic seed usage and local agricultural practices. They highlighted the critical role of food production, equating its importance to that of weaponry.

The protest garnered backing from several political figures, including Balıkesir Metropolitan Mayor Ahmet Akin and representatives from the CHP and Good Party. The farmers have vowed to persist with their demonstrations, including road blockades, until their demands are met with a discussion with the agriculture minister.
