In Bangladesh, onion prices have escalated by Tk 10-15 per kg, impacting consumers. On Sunday, local onions were sold at Tk 70-75 per kg and imported onions at Tk 75-80 per kg in groceries and kitchen markets, reflecting a Tk 10-15 increase per kg within a week and Tk 20 per kg over two weeks, according to market sources.
The Trading Corporation of Bangladesh (TCB) reported a 20% rise in onion prices within a week, with current prices exceeding 50% of those a year ago. A grocer in Dolphin Goli, Kolabagan, noted a Tk 8-10 per kg increase in wholesale prices at Karwan Bazar recently. In Pabna, a vegetable and spice trader mentioned that traders experienced losses this year, with prices initially above Tk 50 per kg in March at the farmer level, later dropping to Tk 35-38 per kg. He highlighted that larger traders in Dhaka and Chattogram significantly influence market prices. Md Akmol Hossain, an Agricultural Marketing Officer in Rajbari, stated that the price for seasonal 'haali' onions was Tk 35-38 per kg at the farmer level this year, suggesting a robust market. He mentioned that the harvest season has concluded, with many large-scale farmers still storing onions. A decline in production was noted due to farmers harvesting immature onions in March to achieve better prices.
