Peterson Farms has partnered with TerraCycle to enable school communities to recycle Peterson Farms Treats® applesauce pouches. Most flexible plastic food pouches are considered hard to recycle because they are made of multiple layers of different materials. The Peterson Farms Treats Applesauce Pouch Free Recycling Program offers schools and households a recycling solution for the pouches, which are not typically accepted through curbside recycling services.
"Through this partnership, we continue to grow by sticking to our founding commitments to sustainable business practices and the reduction of environmental impacts," says Sarah Schlukebir, chief sales and marketing officer of Peterson Farms.
To participate, users can sign up on TerraCycle's Peterson Farms Treats Applesauce Pouch Free Recycling Program page and mail in the empty flexible plastic applesauce packaging using the prepaid shipping label from anywhere in the contiguous United States. Once collected, the pouches are cleaned and separated by material type. The materials are recycled into raw formats that manufacturers use to make new products.
The program offers schools and households a recycling solution for these applesauce pouches, which are not typically accepted through curbside recycling services.
"The benefits of the recycling program are two-fold," said Tom Szaky, founder and CEO of TerraCycle. "The company isn't simply offering a sustainable solution to keep applesauce pouches out of landfills. Peterson Farms is creating an opportunity for students to learn about the value in recycling packaging from snacks they consume every day at school."
Schools and households can also earn recycling rewards for every shipment sent in through TerraCycle. Rewards can be redeemed in the form of a donation to a school or charity of their choice.
Peterson Farms is committed to minimizing the impact of its activities on the environment through resource management, supporting regulatory compliance and other policies concerning environmental issues. The company achieved a 30 percent reduction in water usage on campus from 2018 to 2022. Peterson Farms continues to increase the production capacity of existing processing lines and build new processing lines while reducing electricity consumption by transitioning to newer technologies and focused initiatives. The company also seeks to prioritize its environmental aspects by improving procedures for monitoring and measuring to exceed compliance obligations and customer expectations.
