Abril Blue+ and Alessia Blue+

Two new varieties of Peruvian blueberries hit the market

Inka's Berries has launched two new blueberry varieties: Abril Blue+ and Alessia Blue+. This launch comes at a crucial time, since it has been carried out in the framework of a search for robust, resilient, highly productive varieties with excellent flavor.

These new additions to the portfolio have been developed with Peruvian genetics and with the solid backing in genetic improvement of the prestigious University of Georgia. Through extensive genetic research and development, the company and the university have worked closely together to create premium varieties that ensure optimal performance in terms of quality and consistency.

After facing difficult situations such as the El NiƱo phenomenon, the company has acknowledged the need to update the current genetics to guarantee resilience to winter warming, tropical climates and any radical climate change.

"The characteristics of Abril Blue+ and Alessia Blue+ offer significant advantages. Both varieties have an excellent post-harvest shelf life (+70 days), a large caliber (+70% Jumbo >1Bmm), a sweet taste and a significant productivity of over 4 kg per plant," says Ricardo Sumar, manager of the Genetics Division of Inka's Berries.

"Today, our goal is to seek 'tropicalized' genetics that allow a trouble-free production with heat in order to obtain a product of exceptional quality. Alessia Blue+ and Abril Blue+ are ready to face the new climate challenges, which we are sure will be increasingly demanding. We have more than 100 hectares planted with our two new varieties, ready to enter the most demanding markets," says Carlos Gereda, executive president of Inka's Berries.

With more than 15 years of experience, Inka's Berries has been the company responsible for laying the groundwork for the growth and development of the blueberry sector in Peru. It has explored and confirmed its potential within the country before entering the global market.
