Peru's Senasa projects new international market access by 2024

The National Agrarian Health Service of Peru (Senasa) recently unveiled its 2024 action plan, projecting 13 new international market accesses for agricultural products. The focus will be on Argentina for fresh pepper, Chile for table grapes, China for pomegranate and frozen fruit, Colombia for lucuma, Malaysia for avocado, the US for pitahaya, aguaymanto and asparagus, Japan for blueberries and New Zealand and Vietnam for citrus fruits. These countries are nearing the final stages of establishing phytosanitary import requirements. The Foreign Trade Society of Peru (Comex Peru) highlighted the dynamism of Peru's blueberry and citrus fruit exports and their future markets: Japan and Vietnam, respectively.

Blueberry exports to Japan have been growing annually, with shipments totaling US$1.378 million between January and November 2023, a growth of +13.4% compared to the same period in 2022. The US, Netherlands, and China accounted for 85.9% of Peru's blueberry exports to the world during this period. In 2022, Japan imported US$3.274 million in fruits globally, with Peru ranking tenth among the main global fruit suppliers to this market. Japanese blueberry imports reached a value of US$21.8 million in 2022, with Mexico, the US, and Chile being the main supplier countries.

Meanwhile, Vietnam imported fruits totaling US$3.354 million in 2022, with tangerines, mandarins, and fresh oranges being the main imported products. Peru's citrus shipments to the world from January to November 2023 reached US$267 million, showing a slight contraction of -0.9% compared to the same period in 2022. The main destinations for Peru's citrus exports were the US, the Netherlands, the UK, Mexico, and Canada.
