Galilee Exports look to good mango and pomegranate summer season

Israel’s 2022-2023 avocado season ended with lower volumes

Avocado producers and exporters in Israel are already looking forward to harvesting higher volumes in the next season, starting later this year, after their 2022-2023 avocado season ended with lower volumes last month (April) in a so called off-year. The nearly 50% lower volumes were expected after the coldest flowering period in 50 years was experienced last year before the harvest started.

According to Eitan Zvi, VP of marketing at Galilee Exports in Israel, “We finished with a very low yield, something like 50% less volume, but with high prices. For the coming season the avocados look great, we are expecting very good yield. We are still in a crucial period now in May. It will be an on-year and big year next season. We will have numbers in about a month. At the end of August we start to export the greenskin Galil variety followed by Ettinger around mid-September."

Good outlook for Israel summer fruit
The 2022-2023 avocado season is now firmly behind them, producers are now looking to promising seasons for Israel’s mangoes and pomegranates. “In the summer we will off course export mangoes. Mainly the Keitt and Kent but also the ready to eat varieties, Omer, Shelly and Maya, which are all coming from the end of July to September. We will begin with the early varieties of pomegranates at the start of August. Both crops look fine with maybe a little bit more volumes expected for mangoes and pomegranates. We export medjool dates 12 months of the year,” says Zvi.

"This season we have successfully implemented a new net packaging production line at our packing house, and we have already seen success in the markets. We are excited to offer our customers this new opportunity of tailor made avocado nets packages according to their choice of varieties, sizes and designs. Galilee is planning to expand its packaging solutions, by acquiring and implementing additional technology, and will be offering its customers new packaging options in the upcoming season," states Zvi.

The strong Israeli Shekel, compared to the Euro and dollar, has for the past few years been a challenge, but since January it weakened a lot. This helped a little with the export earnings of producers and exporters in Israel during the past avocado season. Zvi concludes by saying: “although the exchange rate is better than a few months ago it is still not where it used to be a few years ago.”
