Based on a report by the country's Ministry of Environment, Water and Agriculture, Saudi Arabia is close to become self-sufficient in papaya production. The Saudis might produce 4,100 tons of papaya this year. Exports will reach 296 tons and re-exports 3.8 tons, while imports should reach 571 tons. According to the report, the country already meets 95% of domestic demand.
Papaya production season starts in May in Saudi Arabia and continues until August, with cultivation concentrated mainly in the Eastern Province and the Jazan region. The country grows several types of papaya, but the main one is the Red Lady. The report highlights the benefits of the fruit, such as improving digestion and being a source of nutrients.
