Carlo Salerno of Sapros Handels- und Vertriebs Ltd at the Karlsruhe wholesale market:

"There was a great demand for Sicilian oranges, which we obtain exclusively from Ribera"

The demand for citrus fruits is gradually coming to an end, said Carlo Salerno from the Karlsruhe wholesale company Sapros Handels- und Vertriebs Ltd. us. "We still have oranges from Sicily, Calabria and Spain. However, the demand is slowly decreasing. In the case of clementines, we are now in the final stages with the Nadorcott variety, which is also reflected in the quality, depending on the variety."

""Until the end, there was a great demand for Sicilian oranges, which we obtain exclusively from Ribera. The quality was great and it was very convincing to customers in terms of taste as well," Salerno informs us. His customers include food retailers, wholesalers, weekly markets, as well as large kitchens and canteens, which still offer fruit in pieces. Clementines are marketed in 10-kg units and oranges in 10-kg and 15-kg units.

Overall, the citrus season has been good, he said. "Given the calmer demand, prices are much more relaxed now. Especially as we have also had to reduce prices somewhat to maintain or continue to boost sales. The volumes availability exists, but people are no longer stocking up as much as they did during the winter, of course. On request, however, we can of course still dispose of larger volumes.

Start of the asparagus and strawberry season
Interest is now slowly leaning toward asparagus. "Customers are already asking us about the first asparagus. In addition, Easter falls on an earlier date this year. Strawberries we also already offer, where the sale of the product is extremely dependent on the weather. However, it is noticeable that consumers now want to consume other products again." Currently, the wholesale company offers strawberries from Italy. "Although there are already German strawberries, which are primarily greenhouse products. However, the prices for the local produce are still too high."
