Jordan’s National Society for Consumer Protection (NSCP) has called on the Ministry of Agriculture to allow the import of adequate quantities of bananas to meet market demand, especially after an "unjustified increase" on the price of the fruit.
In a statement, the society said that the selling price of one kilogram of local bananas has reached JD1.25, which is the same price of large imported bananas, including the cost of shipping and additional fees. The society has received “hundreds of complaints” from citizens and merchants regarding the high price of local bananas, said the head of the NSCP, Mohammed Obeidat.
He attributed the high price to low local production during the current season and called for sufficient imports to meet market demand, especially as the festival of Ramadan approaches.
