"Season saved thanks to exports"

A few more weeks of Italian Comune clementines on the market

"We will end the Comune clementines season earlier than expected. There is no shortage of product, but unfortunately there is a high percentage of dropout due to the bizarre weather conditions until recently. Presumably we will load the last pallets before the end of the month," said Daniele Martucci, owner of Martucci Srl, a company in the southern Italian province of Taranto (Apulia) that specializes in citrus processing and sales.

"The persistent rain in early December, the high humidity and the many sunny days caused problems of "water spot," leading to a failure rate of almost 30% in the orchards and packaging warehouse. To avoid potential disputes, we have already completed the brushed product. In these last few weeks of sales, we will be focusing exclusively on clementines with leaves, which will be shipped to Romania and some other European markets. For the grower, current prices are around €0.40-0.50 per kilo, depending on the quality."

For Martucci, the clementine season can be considered satisfactory, but mainly thanks to exports. "More than 90% of our volumes were shipped to a number of European markets, especially France and Eastern European countries. We were able to make it thanks to those foreign customers, who continue to demand large quantities of fruit. In Italy, however, clementine sales never really took off this year."
